"A house without books is like a room without windows."  Heinrich Mann

 What is in a Name?

Memory Hold-The-Door second-hand bookshop boasts a name with lots of history. John Buchan, a Scottish born British writer was the first person to have elaborated on the beauty of the Haenertsburg and Magoebaskloof areas in his books.  His first novel, “Prester John” was set in this area.  Memory Hold-The-Door is the title of his autobiography.

This unusual store will excite any book-lover and you will want to put yourself down in front of the fireplace with a cup of steaming “kondensmelk koffie” in your hand – do not forget about the “Boerebeskuit”!

The Coffee Shop spills onto the stoep outside and invites all visitors to stay for a while...

On offer are homemade sweet- and savoury treats with really good "boere koffie" or a nice cup of tea.

Please browse through our Photo gallery for photos and descriptions of some of our book collections.

Signing the wall!

When in our shop the next time you visit, have a good look at the wall next to the fireplace.

Every signature tells a story of an author, artist or musician that visited us, entertained us and spend time with us in front of the fireplace.

Some of our visitors were Kimon Neophyte, Louis Changuion, Charles Leach, Ina van Schalkwyk, Koos Roets, Marloe Scott-Wilson and the well-known Richard Cock.

Coffee please..

There is a certain pleasure in sitting down in a bookshop, surrounded by books from days gone by, stories, photographs and yes, you said it, a warm cosy fireplace.

The Coffee Shop serves good strong filter coffee, teas, a variety of home-made sweet- and savoury treats and is a very popular venue where villages get together to meet and chat.
Spend some time here, it will be worth your while!
